Band of the Year.
Joel loves living in Texas.
Drums - Duane Hamilton
Duane
Hamilton is no novice
when it comes to Austin music.
Growing up in the “Live Music Capital of the World”, he has played drums
professionally since age 14. In high school, his father would drive him to and
from various haunts across the city to play country gigs.
His first road show came upon high school
graduation with Capitol Record’s Stoney
Edwards. Stoney was the person that
tagged Duane with the nickname “DooHickey” After one and a half years of
touring, Duane returned home and played with various top Austin dancehall bands.
In 1979, Duane collaborated with Leroy
Preston (original songwriter and member of Asleep at the Wheel) and Jon
Emery to form the band Whiskey
Drinkin’ Music, which toured the country for three years 1979-81.
He then spent 9 years 1981-1990
working for one of the original Cosmic
Cowboys, Rusty Weir, where, as
Duane puts it, “most people don’t get that much time for a felony offense in Texas.”
Next, Duane played off and on
with Tish Hinajosa, and Champ Hood and Walter Hyatt until the birth of his son, Dylan. This completely
changed his life and he put the sticks away for about a decade. In 2001 he began playing again with various Austin bands including The Jon Emery Band, The Flyin' A's, and Ryan T. Briggs.
Now Duane lays
down the groove for Weldon Henson. It’s
the perfect fit as far as Duane is concerned…. straight ahead True
Country Music, just the way he likes it.
Duane says “I
couldn’t keep playing with out the tremendous support from my wife Dawn, son
Dylan, daughter Billie Jo and her husband Pete and of course the apple of my
eye, my granddaughter Haley. I am a
lucky guy…great family and killer gig.”
